Suez (formerly Suez Environnement) is a French multinational company engaged in the provision of water, electricity and gas services in several countries around the world. Founded in 1997 as a result of the merger of Lyonnaise des Eaux and Compagnie universelle du canal maritime de Suez, it takes its name from the latter’s participation in the construction of the Suez Canal in the 19th century. Today it makes profits in the order of USD 55.2 billion a year (2004), and employs more than 160,000 people.
In 2008, the group merged with Gaz de France to form GDF Suez and Suez Environnement, which in 2015 became Engie (formerly GDF Suez) and Suez (formerly Suez Environnement).
