ALBA is the only synchrotron light source in Spain. It is a complex of electron accelerators that generate synchrotron light (or synchrotron radiation) to analyse the properties of matter at the atomic and molecular level. Its applications cover many fields: physics, chemistry, life sciences, environment, historical heritage, etc.
ALBA consists of a linear particle accelerator and a synchrotron. Electrons are accelerated to near-light speed, reaching an energy of up to 3 Gigaelectronvolts (GeV). These electrons are injected into a storage ring with a perimeter of 270 metres. It is equipped to produce electromagnetic radiation in a continuum of wavelengths from infrared to X-rays. It is a third-generation source, with most of the light coming from insertion devices such as wigglers and undulators. In 2021, it has started the design of its refurbishment to become a fourth-generation facility.
